Caring for Shaved Heads

You may not have hair on your head, but you still need to take care of it.

When it comes to moisturizing, you should think of your scalp as an extension of your face
Your scalp should be nourished as much as possible. You should think of your skin as a whole, starting at the top of your neck – moisturizing your skin from top to bottom, like your face. If you have had oily hair in the past, you should be extra careful. You don’t want to clog your pores and cause excessive sweating, shine, or even acne. You can use a special moisturizer or facial moisturizer for the bald area.

Keep Your Scalp Clean
As we mentioned before, you should think of your scalp as an extension of your face or where your hair is. To cleanse this area, you can choose between a shampoo or a facial cleanser. If you choose a shampoo, you should choose one that is specifically hydrating. If you choose a facial cleanser, make sure it’s for your face, not your body. That’s why we especially prefer cleansers that contain salicylic acid, as they help balance oil levels in your skin and prevent excessive shine. (It also helps prevent flaking!)

You should wear sunscreen
Your entire head is exposed to the sun – scalp burn is the worst type of sunburn. As with moisturizing and cleansing, your scalp is more similar to the skin type on your face than the rest of your body. So you should wear the same sunscreen on your head as you do on your face.

You need a second mirror
If you’re going to shave your head – no matter how hard you try – you can’t do it blindly. You need a second mirror so you can see what you’re doing there.

Get an ergonomic razor
While we admire people who shave their hair with a razor, we highly recommend getting a razor that pivots and maneuvers with the contours of your head. Better yet, consider a razor that is held in the palm of your hand and is specifically designed to shave your entire scalp. It literally makes the whole process smoother.

Don’t forget to exfoliate
Aside from feeling incredibly good, exfoliating also helps keep your scalp smooth and prevents split ends. It removes dead skin, helps unclog pores, and significantly reduces the likelihood of dandruff and fungal growth. Consider using a chemical peel or daily exfoliating cleanser to achieve the same goal.

Get ready to combat excessive shine
The most important thing for bald scalps is to use an anti-shine product. You can use a mattifying primer (apply before moisturizer) or a mattifying moisturizer directly. Many people carry anti-shine drying wipes with them, especially on a hot day. We recommend!
